What We Worship Revealed

Then our ancestors joined in the worship of Baal at Peor; they even ate sacrifices offered to the dead! [Psalm 106.28]

The fact that God's people ate sacrifices was nothing unusual. In fact, it was very usual. Eating sacrifices was as much a part of the 'event of making sacrifices' as was the killing of the animals and offering their blood on the altar.

The thing that was appalling in the verse noted above is that they ate sacrifices made to something other than God. Even worse, the sacrifices they are were sacrifices to the dead in contrast to eating sacrifices made to God Who is Life.

Taking this thought further, I wonder how God looks upon our festivals today? What festivals? one might ask... One particularly comes to mind - the festival of sports that so many celebrate. The thought of 'tailgating' comes to mind where food is consumed in the name of the game - often accompanied by special ritualistic clothing and activities.

Yes, I have gone completely mad, right?

Right?

Father, help us to be mindful of our activities here on earth and how they reveal what we worship.
