Two Nations

And the LORD told her, “The sons in your womb will become two nations. From the very beginning, the two nations will be rivals. One nation will be stronger than the other; and your older son will serve your younger son.” [Genesis 25.23]

It was one thing for Abraham to have two sons by two different women and for them to become rivals. But it was another thing altogether for Isaac to have two sons by the same woman - twins at that - and for them to become rivals.

The significance of this is most likely seen in the lives the two boys grow up to live. Through the lineage of one of the boys God's promise will be fulfilled - the Savior and Prince of the Kingdom of God will come.

It will be interesting to pay attention to this in tomorrow's reading (and following) - to see what the characters of the two boys reveal about them that will speak to the generations to follow.

Father, help me to see what You are saying by the distinctions between brothers in the Bible.
