Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame. [Genesis 2.25]
What a better way to start off a New Year than to talk about nakedness? Ha.
I want to provide contrast to the verse above with the following:
At that moment [when they ate the forbidden fruit] their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. [Genesis 3.7]
What about the knowledge of good and evil caused Adam and Eve to feel shame about their nakedness? Why did their guilt make them ashamed of their nudity?
Before sinning, were Adam and Eve attracted to each other physically? God had already told them to "be fruitful and multiply." Did the couple engage each other sexually simply at God's command or was there visual physical attraction?
These are all good questions I think, but their answers are unknown to me.
Something about the knowledge of good and evil caused Adam and Eve to "see" each other physically in a different light. I can't imagine they were physically blind before eating the fruit because of the following verse:
The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious... [Genesis 3.6a]
So, something about their eyes were opened was different than just having or not having vision.
Here's a thought: could the knowledge of good and evil have had some direct connection with covetousness? Of course Adam and Eve could see - they could see and appreciate everything God had made. They were furthermore told they could enjoy everything God had made except one thing... that tree of the knowledge of good and evil. To see the tree was one thing, but to touch it and eat it was to partake of something that was not theirs.
But why would that cause them to look upon each other differently (as they were in fact given to each other)? Well, first off, the Bible seems to indicate that it was not each other's nakedness that caused the individuals to have shame, but their own nakedness.
Why weren't Adam and Eve simply ashamed of disobeying instead of being naked?
I am afraid I have many more questions than I have answers! But I know this: Nakedness (nudity) and sexual sins have been problematic for mankind for a LONG time. I cannot help but believe this fact is not ironic in light of Adam and Eve's original shame over their nakedness.
I mean, what were they ashamed of? Had not God created them? (oops, there comes more questions...)
No doubt, there is something to be learned from Genesis. I believe a better understanding of God will reveal a better understanding of the early events in Genesis regarding man.
Father, I really would like to understand more about the original sin discussed here.
