Another Question

“Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” [John 20.15]

Another question.

Jesus asked Mary a question, but Jesus did not need to know the answer to it - she did!

Mary needed to consider some things in her heart and Jesus knew that questions would be the only way to make her do so.

The question, "Why are you crying?" is a question straight to the heart. God always goes straight to the heart. He acknowledged there was pain in asking this question and also encouraged Mary to try to see past her immediate emotion preparing her for the next question...

The question, "Who are you looking for?" seems simple enough, but Mary needed to understand whether she was looking for a man or looking for Messiah. Obviously, if she was looking for a man, she was in the wrong place because his body was not there. If she were looking for a man, there could only be confusion because, "who would move a dead body?" But, if she was looking for the Messiah, she was exactly where she needed to be - seeing exactly what she needed to see. If she was looking for the Messiah, she was witnessing His  testimony about Himself fulfilled before her very eyes. He had risen!

God's questions to man are powerful. We should all consider every question God ever asked!

Father, thank You for Your questions! Help me to see what it is You are saying through each and every one!
