We Don't Know

The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” [John 2.1-5]

Why did Mary, mother of Jesus, tell the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."?

What basis did Mary have to do that? Scripturally-speaking, we have no idea. We may draw some conclusions, however, we must do so with reservation and care.

Although "turning water into wine" is listed as Jesus' first miracle, we can only assume Mary had precedence for suggesting to the servants there, "Do whatever he tells you."

Had Mary witnessed a young Jesus do miracles prior to this in the privacy of their home? We don't know.

Or, had Mary remembered the words of the angel who proclaimed Jesus' birth and, come to the Spirit-led realization, at that point of running out of wine, that Jesus' life of miracles was to begin? We don't know.

We just don't know.

But, whatever it was, was indeed powerful!

Father, there remains much we do not know about Jesus' life and ministry. Help us to draw upon what we do know and allow it to guide us for what we do not know!
