“After this time had passed, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven. My sanity returned, and I praised and worshiped the Most High and honored the one who lives forever. His rule is everlasting, and his kingdom is eternal. All the people of the earth are nothing compared to him. He does as he pleases among the angels of heaven and among the people of the earth. No one can stop him or say to him, ‘What do you mean by doing these things?’ [Daniel 4.34-35]
Nebuchadnezzar had suffered for his arrogance and pride. He had lived like an animal for a prescribed period of time. In that time, evidently, Nebuchadnezzar was conscious enough to know what was going on and it changed him. When he regained his 'sanity' he made the statement above.
Sometimes it takes a different perspective for us to really see God for all He is. It shouldn't have to, but often it does.
Pride is a nasty thing. It prevents us from seeing God for Who He is. Nebuchadnezzar is not the only person to have experienced humbling circumstances in the Bible. However, his story is a lesson for us all. Nebuchadnezzar reveals what true humility does in a man's life: the first thing is that it is not ashamed to tell what happened!
Father, I am reminded today of the importance of getting and remaining humble before You. You are God and there is no other.
