But I will restore the fortunes of Moab in days to come. I, the LORD, have spoken!” [Jeremiah 48.47]
What is the big deal about this verse?
It is just that nothing but predictions of disaster precede it! God was describing terrible circumstances of defeat and loss prior to this. Moab would experience some of the worst effects of God turning His glance away from them thus unleashing destruction upon them.
But, verse 47 above must not be overlooked. It simply must be acknowledged because it is revealing. Verse 47 above reveals God's loving and restoring nature. He is good. Of course God is just, but His justice only "protects" His goodness and faithful love.
People who shake their fist at God have failed to understand that our loving God is just. Like Job, we may appear sinless on the outside - and we may even fool ourselves - but inside, in our hearts, the faithless genetic disorder of sin is constantly trying to replicate its originator in arrogance, deception, murder, theft, and destruction. Faith and faithfulness is the believer's only hope. Nothing but faith pleases God.
Oh, be sure of this, we deserve every possible bad thing that could ever happen to us. But it is God's nature of love and forgiveness (seen in the passage above) that brings any good thing in our lives. It is God's love that sent His Son to die for our sin. It is the gift of faith built into every man that allows man to enjoy God's love. But, inactive faith accomplishes nothing.
God's nature is to persist in love. God is love. Our duty is to persist in faith. Faith is the natural response to God's love. God's love is the platform upon which faith operates. Unless we see and understand that God is love, our faith will never grow. Faith works by love.
How cool is that? The big deal is love.
Father, You are amazing. Thank You for speaking to me through this little verse today. Thank You for showing me Your faithful love that truly endures forever!
