Listen, all the earth! I will bring disaster on my people. It is the fruit of their own schemes, because they refuse to listen to me. They have rejected my word. [Jeremiah 6.19]
Fortunately, these words weren't spoken to us...
Or, were they?
The apostle Paul wrote to the Church in Galatia the following:
Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. [Galatians 6.7]
Are we planting "obedience to God"? Or are we rejecting His Word?
Before claiming "Grace!" in Jesus, let the warning be loud and clear: Faith is an act of obedience and, therefore, if we are not actively "believing" in Jesus, then we are in sin and just as vulnerable to the disastrous curses of the Law as those trying to live by the Law!
Whether we are obedient to the Law (which no man can fully accomplish) or obedient in faith, the requirement for obedience has never been removed. Old Testament and New Testament have this common requirement: obedience! The obedience of faith is no less important than the obedience to the Law. Christ's work on the Cross is of no value to the one who does not believe! Oh, be sure the value of the Cross is not diminished, but it's eternal value is not applicable to the unbeliever.
We are living in the fruit of our own schemes. If we have refused to listen to God and His Gospel message - rejected His spoken and Living Word, we are cursed. It requires only a quick review of our our circumstances to determine whether we are living under a curse or under a blessing. Deuteronomy 28 clearly defines what is a curse and what is a blessing.
If, upon examining our lives and realizing that we are living under a curse, if we first repent then believe, we find Redemption - Redemption in Christ our Redeemer! One may try to be good enough, but that will only end in frustration and failure. But faith in Jesus Christ is immediately rewarded with peace within - the presence of God's Holy Spirit - and opens up unlimited miraculous power thereafter in response to genuine faith.
But we must remember that faith is a seed. It must be watered and nurtured in the Word of God and prayer so that it might grow. Jesus was very clear about this. To believe in Christ for Salvation and yet fail to believe Christ for deliverance from curses (as defined in Deuteronomy 28), is to disallow faith to grow to its full potential. It is a rejection of God's Word. It is a refusal to be obedient in faith. it is why Christians experience curses just like unbelievers. It is NOT the way God intended it! It is NOT "abundant life" as Jesus came to give. In the strictest sense of the word, it is sin because whatever is not of faith is, in fact and deed, SIN!
Father, help us to believe. Help us to reject the schemes, religion, and error of our own ways. Help us instead to listen to You and Your Holy Word! Help us to listen to Jesus and rise above the disasters of disobedience! Lord, I repent of my unbelief!
