Am I Armed For The LORD's Battles?

The tribes of Gad and Reuben said again, “We are your servants, and we will do as the LORD has commanded! We will cross the Jordan into Canaan fully armed to fight for the LORD, but our property will be here on this side of the Jordan.” [Numbers 32.31-32]

I have never really realized how amazing a story this is!

The tribes of Reuben and Gad, having much livestock, realized that the lands Jazer and Gilead on the east side of the Jordan River were more suitable for livestock than the land of Canaan. So, they requested that they be allowed to take up residence there.

However, what Reuben and Gad proposed was amazing. They actually intended to go on across the Jordan River and fight with their fellow Israelites until the land was conquered before returning to settle in their own land.

The thought crossed my mind today, "How many times do I do something purely for someone else with nothing in it for me?"

We are not talking about a small task here either. What Israel faced was war. They would be acquiring land occupied by others who would surely not be willing to just give up and leave!

And yet, Reuben and Gad committed to the task!

Here is the key to understanding what really took place:

Then Moses said, “If you keep your word and arm yourselves for the LORD’s battles... [Numbers 32.20]

Yes, the key to understanding Reuben's and Gad's commitment is found in the fact that they recognized it wasn't just for the other tribes they would help fight, but it was for the LORD.

What a story - what a lesson!

Am I armed for the LORD's battles? (Regardless what's in it for me?)

Father, help me to be part of a cause greater than myself. Help me to see the importance of helping others realize blessings from You!
