“I vow by the living God, who has taken away my rights, by the Almighty who has embittered my soul—As long as I live, while I have breath from God, my lips will speak no evil, and my tongue will speak no lies. I will never concede that you are right; I will defend my integrity until I die. I will maintain my innocence without wavering. My conscience is clear for as long as I live. [Job 27.2-6]
Wow, what powerful words from Job! What conviction is seen in his words! What confidence is portrayed! What a declaration!
But, you know what? The same guy said this later (to God):
“I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.” [Job 40.4-5]
What changed? A rebuke from God. Job got put in his place. God asked Job a few questions and Job suddenly realized that he had let his mouth go a little too far.
What is the lesson for us? Be slow to speak and quick to hear.
Just because we may feel like we have it all figured out, does not necessarily mean we do!
Father, if ever there was a story portraying the absolute necessity of humility, Job's is it. Help me to keep this in mind both when things are good and also when they are not so good.
