Why?

“Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” [Luke 23.34]

“I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” [Luke 23.43]

“Dear woman, here is your son.” [John 19.26]

“Here is your mother.” [John 19.27]

“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” [Mark 15.34]

“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” [Matthew 27.46]

“Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” [Luke 23.46]

“I am thirsty.” [John 19.28]

“It is finished!” [John 19.30]

There are certainly some discrepancies concerning Jesus' last words on the cross. Only Matthew and Mark agree.

If we were to take the information we are given from the four Gospel accounts of Jesus' time on the cross, we could surmise that our greatest possibility of accuracy would be found in those accounts that agree. And here would be the words spoken that have more than one account: “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

I don't know about anyone else, but I have felt, and perhaps even spoken, these words myself. Life can be tough. There is something quite important and telling about these words!

Jesus was very clear that God was His Father.

Jesus was very clear that God abandoned Him (for a time) on the cross.

Like so many words Jesus spoke on earth, these words have great meaning. “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” There is indeed that question: "WHY?"

Why, indeed.

Jesus spoke these words I believe because we can relate to them. I personally relate to these words more than I care to admit. But that only makes these words that much more important!

Jesus spoke words that I can relate to. Why? Because He intended very much to relate to me. That was the whole purpose of the cross! To relate to me! TO TAKE MY PLACE!

Father, thank You for Jesus.
