So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me. I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.” [John 6.53-58]
Yeah, it gets weird here... unless one comprehends what Jesus means.
Jesus' flesh is His works. God doesn't want our works - He wants Jesus' works. We must understand this! The only way we get Jesus' works is to consume Him! We need Jesus 'in us' if we intend to have His works come from us. "You are what you eat."
Jesus' blood is His covenant. It is interesting that in the Old Testament all blood was prohibited from human consumption. Why? The Word tells us because the 'life' is in the blood. But Jesus uses very symbolic language to get us to understand that God desires us to have life! However, that life cannot be ours until at first the flesh (Jesus' works) are in place.
It has to be Jesus' works and not ours! Our effort - our righteousness "is as filthy rages" before God. But Jesus' righteousness is perfect. The life (eternal life) can be given freely when the works are perfect.
Remember why God kicked Adam and Eve our of he Garden of Eden? Because he did not want them to eat the tree of life in their sinful condition (unrighteous works).
But, in Jesus, we can partake of life (the blood of Christ) because He has first given us His body - His flesh - His works beforehand. He came to earth in the flesh and THEN offered His blood.
It's all really cool when you think about it. What an amazing plan.
Father, You are so good. Thank You for Jesus' flesh and His blood. Thank You also for Jesus' example to us how to live in Your Kingdom!
