Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh’s daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites. The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel, “You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.” Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway. He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the Lord. [1 Kings 11.1-3]
Seriously, how many times have we totally ignored what God has said to do (or not do) and done what we want to do anyway?
No matter how holy we may think we are, we must remember that even though God appeared to Solomon on two different occasions, Solomon still betrayed God in a nasty and twisted sort of way.
This discussion could go so many ways from here, but suffice it to say that Solomon literally embraced his downfall.
Oh, we'd never do that, right? It was Solomon's very own words of wisdom (in Proverbs) that warned against being seduced by immoral women!
Father, please give us eyes to see and ears to hear and hearts to understand. Otherwise, our stories will end just like Solomon's. Help each of us to see our tendencies to betray You. Help us recognize our weaknesses to our own carnal desires to serve ourselves. May You find us repentant.
