Others First

The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies— I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.” [1 Kings 3.10-14]

If no other scripture about giving rather than receiving existed, this one would be sufficient to know God's desire in the matter!

What Solomon asked for was for others - not himself.

Solomon asked for wisdom to rule Israel as he knew it would take that to bless the people. Solomon took his new role as king of Israel seriously - he knew it was a daunting task. Solomon felt like a child in need of help and that is the way he prayed to God. Solomon was sincere in his request as his request was for an entire nation's benefit.

The thing is, God left his proposition to Solomon wide open for whatever Solomon wanted. Solomon's true heart was revealed in his genuinely selfless request.

Yes, Solomon's heart was revealed in his request.

So, our hearts are revealed in our requests.

Jesus made clear we are to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. This is very much in line with Solomon's request to rule his kingdom on earth well. And, just as Solomon was promised every possible earthly blessing because of his other-mindedness, so, we have been promised every earthly provision if we make God's work on earth our first work priority.

The question begs to be asked: Do we believe what Jesus said in Matthew 6.33? Do we REALLY believe what Jesus said in Matthew 6.33?

Father, I am totally convicted this morning of my self-seeking ways. Please forgive me for thinking of myself first - for flagrantly ignoring Your Word - Your commandment - for how I should live.
