What Is God Doing?

For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”’ [Acts 2.34-35]

More than one account of Jesus' position after His resurrection and ascension indicates that He is seated at God's right hand.

So what is going on now in that heavenly realm?

I think the New Testament is fairly clear that Jesus is interceding for us.

But what is God doing?

According to the account above, it would appear God is engaged in warfare humbling Jesus' enemies beneath His feet.

If we take Jesus' life into account as revealing His enemies, we may conclude a couple of things: 1) Satan is Jesus' enemy; and, 2) everthing and everyone controlled by Satan is Jesus' enemy.

We saw early in Jesus' adult life how He dealt with Satan directly and we saw in His three years of ministry how he dealt with Satan indirectly. Jesus was intolerant of Satan and his works. Jesus refuted both people and situations controlled by Satan. He recognized and remedied Satan's deception, destruction and death upon the lives of people. He clearly identified Satan's purpose on earth to kill, steal, and destroy.

Jesus was not undecided about His life and ministry on earth. He very clearly proceeded with His work, and His work was to counter the efforts and effects of His enemy, Satan.

So where does that leave us as believers while Jesus is now seated at God's right hand?

This is where all Jesus' Kingdom talk must be realized and heeded in our lives. We are now the stewards of this Kingdom. Jesus started God's Kingdom dominion and left it to us to continue. We have "all authority" from Jesus to continue the work He so clearly demonstrated for us by His own life. God wills to do this work - His work of defeating Jesus' enemies (Satan, deception, destruction and death) - through us, with Jesus at His right hand interceding for us.

Our work is the coming of God's Kingdom - bringing His will to situations on earth "as it is in heaven" while grace is available to all. Our work is to pray "His Kingdom come" and "His will be done" here on earth with heaven as our model. Our work is to further establish the rule of heaven on earth. Our work is to take authority over Jesus' enemies (otherwise, all Jesus' Kingdom speak was useless!). A kingdom is about power and dominion. Jesus spoke more of no other topic than the Kingdom of God. So, any situation where Jesus' enemy is killing, stealing, and destroying is a situation God requires us to subdue and conquer - to put it under Jesus' feet.

This is serious. It is no joke and certainly no denominational preference! Christ followers ARE TO FOLLOW CHRIST (His life is our example)! Regardless how one interprets Matthew 11.12, it cannot be denied that Jesus was speaking of the Kingdom of God and force - the two are connected. Rarely in the history of the world has any kingdom been established by anything less than force.

Jesus did not come to establish a lily-sniffing religion. He came to establish a kingdom - His Kingdom - the Kingdom of God Almighty. But the warfare is not waged so much in the physical realm as it is in the spiritual realm. Paul picked up on this, "We wrestle not against flesh and blood..." but we still WRESTLE with something!

God help us to comprehend His Kingdom!

Father, I want to see clearly - even if it means I see my own pitiful failure as a soldier of the Cross of Christ. Help me now to engage in the battle before me with Your Salvation as my helmet, Your righteousness as my breastplate, Your Truth as my belt, Your Message of Jesus as my shoes, faith as my shield, and Your Word as my weapon!
