“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. [John 14.12]
The same works Jesus did, and more.
This passage of scripture, while very exciting, it also quite worrisome.
If Jesus said we would do the same works as Him, and even greater, then, somewhere, somehow, something has gone terribly wrong. And, judging by the way we see God capably running the universe all through the Bible, I don't think it is a problem on His end.
It all comes down to faith. Jesus said the same and greater works would be done by anyone "who believes." So, if the same or greater works are not seen in us, then it is the logical and obvious conclusion that we do not believe. We may say we believe. We may think we believe. We may even believe we believe. But if our description of believing and Jesus' description of believing do not match, then I think we must defer to Jesus' description. He described believing as doing the same works as He did - and greater.
There are those who negate the validity of believers doing the "same works" as Jesus. They try instead to validate "greater works" saying "leading others to Christ" is a greater work. While leading others to Christ is indeed a greater work, should it not trouble us that the "same works" are missing?
Father, once again, I do find myself troubled that, as a so-called believer, I find myself not really matching up to Jesus' description of a true believer.
