So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules. But Jesus replied, “My Father is always working, and so am I.” So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God. So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished. For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants. In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge, so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him. [John 5.16-23]
How powerful is this passage of Scripture?
The Father/Son relationship of God and Jesus is explained in plain wording here.
Jesus, by His very life, gives us a clear picture of the Father.
Jesus said His Father is always working, and so, He, the Son, is always working.
We also have here that being God's Son makes one equal with God.
Jesus also said that He only does what He sees the Father doing. In other words, everything the Father does is seen in the Son because whatever the Father does, the Son does also.
Let's take a break then and ask ourselves a question. Why, if God supposedly puts cancer or sickness or hardship on people, did we never, in His three years of ministry on earth, see Jesus do anything but heal and do good for people? If God truly authored difficulties in people's lives, wouldn't you think Jesus would have seen at least one instance of that in His three years on earth and done likewise?
Okay, so if we begin to see that Jesus really did reflect the true character of God because God was His Father, what does that make us (who are taught by Jesus Himself that God is our Father as well)?
The Son of a King is a Prince. A Prince carries all the authority of the Kingdom - as much as the Father/King designates.
We need to "connect the dots" between Who God Is, Who Jesus Is, and Who We Are in Him.
Father, it is no small thing that I can call You "Father." Thank You for helping me begin to understand what Jesus taught from the very beginning. Help me to walk on this earth, stepping only where I see Your Light shine the way.
