“I have not sent these prophets, yet they run around claiming to speak for me. I have given them no message, yet they go on prophesying. If they had stood before me and listened to me, they would have spoken my words, and they would have turned my people from their evil ways and deeds. [Jeremiah 23.21-22]
If we are to realize the office and ministry of prophets today, then, it would make sense that prophets today would reveal themselves in work at least similar to prophets of old.
Jeremiah qualified the office of prophet as this: they stand before and listen to God; they speak God's words; and they turn people from their evil ways.
I know there are those who say there are no prophets today, and they may be right. However, if there are no prophets today, it is not because God does not call and ordain prophets today - it is because men do not stand before and listen to God!
And how do we know they do not stand before and listen to God? Because they are not turning people from their evil ways.
Ouch.
Father, help me to consider the words of Jeremiah when I consider the role of prophet for others or even myself. The proof is in the results.
