Go To Church (But Why?)

Let those who are wise understand these things. Let those with discernment listen carefully. The paths of the Lord are true and right, and righteous people live by walking in them. But in those paths sinners stumble and fall. [Hosea 14.9]

This is one of those days that I have set out to write not knowing at all what it is that I will end up with!

It is unfortunate for me that I would be in this predicament because of the first line of the scripture above: "Let those who are wise understand these things."

I suppose the ways of religion could be what Hosea is talking about. Perhaps sinners who have no relationship with God, but who still try to 'do all the right things' could be those who stumble and fall.

'Going to church' is a great example of what Hosea is talking about. There are many who go to church because they have a relationship with God that finds its expression in worship and service to others by being 'at church.'

However, there are those who habitually 'go to church' but have no relationship with God and, in the end, become disgruntled with the so-called hypocrisy of others while failing to see the great hypocrisy in themselves.

In both cases above, they 'go to church.' But those with a relationship with God (the righteous) find life in the very same setting that those with no relationship with God (the sinners) find their demise.

Father, please help me to be wise to understand these things!
