The Lord also said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy. [Leviticus 19.1-2]
It seems prudent to compare this scripture to the following scripture:
May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. [Matthew 6.10b]
Plainly put, if God is holy, then we are to be holy.
We must think this through! If God is holy, then it is our duty to mirror that. As a matter of fact, we are to mirror God period. In other words, whatever we see in God is what we should strive to emulate. But is that really what this means?
If God is Sovereign, are we to also strive to be sovereign? I don't think so.
So, why should we strive for holiness? Because anything less cannot stand in God's presence. It is not a matter of being like God (that was Satan's sin), but instead it is a matter of letting God be Who He is in us.
Perhaps we can go back to the "mirror" terminology because that is the most accurate explanation of our being what God is. A mirror that is any good has been created as such by the One Who wishes to see His reflection. The more time spent on polishing the mirror, the more accurate the reflection. The mirror is just that - a mirror. Yes, it exists of itself, but its purpose for existence is purely that of a tool. It exists to reflect another image.
Satan made the eternal error of attempting to make himself God. In other words, he refused to reflect God, but as we saw in the Garden of Eden, he questioned God's authority and offered a false authority of his own. Instead of holding a mirror up to reflect God, he stuck his face in Eve's sight and suggested disobedience to God.
Back to the Matthew scripture above: if we are to see God's will on earth, we must hold the mirror such as to reflect God in heaven here! Everything one would know of God is revealed in His face. This fact is confirmed by the numerous Old Testament references to people not being able to see God's face - but when anyone even got a glimpse of God, they immediately were humbled and awestruck in Him.
My point is, that if we are to reflect God, we must mirror Him on purpose. Our "mirror" is polished in prayer. Plainly stated, if we do not spend time in God's presence through prayer, we have no hope of reflecting His image and Who He is to Him or the world. Any good work we do apart from reflecting God's will "as it is in heaven," is pride.
I know these thoughts are random and a bit unconsolidated, but I believe they reveal something important!
Father, I know I must reflect You to the world in which I live. Likewise, it is no less important that I reflect You back to You! I totally understand however that Jesus brings a twist to this whole discussion! No doubt, Jesus gave me the perfect image to reflect and this is especially important because I am incapable of 'being the mirror I should be'. In fact, in my failure to reflect, Jesus stands in my place. Wow. Father, You are amazing!
