The people brought special offerings of gold totaling 2,193 pounds, as measured by the weight of the sanctuary shekel. This gold was used throughout the Tabernacle. [Exodus 38.24]
I want mostly to just make an observation today about the gold used in the Tabernacle. At 2,193 pounds, this would be 35,088 ounces of gold. As of this writing, the price of gold is $1,239.20 per ounce. That equals $43,481,049.60 worth of gold used in the Tabernacle (at current gold values).
There was also 7,545 pounds of silver used in the Tabernacle. At today's value of $15.83 per ounce, that amount of silver today would be worth $1,910,997.60.
These figures are of no real significance except to say that if these precious metals were utilized in the construction of the Tabernacle - the place for meeting with God, then that meeting place was indeed a significant place!
If God met with man in the Tabernacle in Old Testament times, where does he meet with God today in New Testament times? The answer may not be simple but it is worth considering that perhaps God now meets with man in heaven! When Jesus died on the cross, the veil in the Temple (the permanent meeting place with God that succeeded the Tabernacle) was torn signifying the boundary between God and man was removed. So, if in fact God is in heaven seated on His throne, then man now goes directly to heaven to meet with God (please bear with me - I am processing here).
Was the veil torn so God could get to man or so man could get to God?
Again, all this information is of no significance but it is interesting to think about.
Father, help me to consider just how extravagant heaven must be if the streets are pure gold. Help me to consider this substantial fact when I represent You!
