A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, “If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. [Luke 14.25-27]
Jesus said some incredibly difficult things in this passage and the following discussion recorded by Luke.
To truly follow Jesus is to give one's own life no consideration. I wonder how any modern human can lay claim to such a feat? Have we damned ourselves by our culture of comfort? These are not easy questions!
Father, as I look into what following Jesus means, help me to competently consider and count the cost!
