This is a pretty straightforward list. But, it is not an easy one.
I am going to reverse-engineer the problem with Judah for just a moment here. It seems maybe this group of directives is symptomatic in its presentation. Isaiah constantly points out that Israel worshiped other gods. Could it be that in so doing, Judah gradually became distracted from doing the tasks clearly associated with devotion to God? It would seem so.
How often do we fail to do God's will because we are too busy? Has what we are busy at become our idol?
In the verses preceding the verses noted above, God states that He is weary of Judah's acts of religion - had the performance of those become idolatrous for Judah? Had the performance of religious acts distracted Judah from staying true to what God really wanted from His people?
We need to have some answers to these questions!
Father, help me to evaluate my own devotion to You even scrutinizing the religious things that possibly keep me from being true to You and Your very clear will?
