There Will Be Music

All these men were under the direction of their fathers as they made music at the house of the Lord. Their responsibilities included the playing of cymbals, harps, and lyres at the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman reported directly to the king. They and their families were all trained in making music before the Lord, and each of them—288 in all—was an accomplished musician. The musicians were appointed to their term of service by means of sacred lots, without regard to whether they were young or old, teacher or student. [1 Chronicles 25.6-8]

Where God dwells, there will be music.

The life of David is an interesting one for sure.  Research of David's life reveals his involvement with music.  No other ruler of Israel (that I know of) was ever so involved with music as was David. Perhaps others were but, because David was apparently an accomplished musician, much is chronicled about his participation in, and promotion of, music.

We know for fact that Saul included music in his life as David was assigned to play the harp when Saul was tormented by an evil spirit.

There are numerous references to singing and praising the LORD throughout the Old Testament. Sometimes that music and praise played a critical role in the outcome of the particular reference's story.

According to today's reading in the OYCB, it seems clear that music was utilized to convey God's messages - the words of songs were direction from God.

We know also that David penned many a song and most, although very personal to David, offer the basis for worship, praise, and thanksgiving to God even today. It does not seem that David employed music in any 'secular' way but reserved it exclusively for God. Mind you, I said, "it does not seem..." as I can recall no reference otherwise.

All the references to David and music are only important as we consider David's relationship with God. Only David is noted in Scriptures as a "man after God's heart." It could be a huge coincidence, but I sincerely doubt it. I believe that any person who genuinely draws near to God will have at least some involvement with music in that relationship! It may simply be worshiping God to a tune or it may be playing skillfully as a master musician, but I dare say that music will play a role in a true believer's devotion.

Father, as I consider the role of music in the life and devotion of David, I conclude that it was a very important detail of David's relationship with You. Help me to utilize music in the same way as much as I can!
