David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. [1 Samuel 17.45]
Although David was serious about this fight, he did not follow standard convention for warfare fighting sword-and-spear with sword-and-spear. The reason for this was quite simply because David had no sword and spear (at least not part of his personal equipment that he was accustomed to). David approached Goliath in an unconventional way - a crude but familiar way - very much as Goliath declared, like one would pursue a dog!
There exists a principle in Goliath's demise that speaks to me today. I feel I am in much the same position as David facing 'his giant.' My battle is not one of military proportions however, but it is a battle nonetheless. How do I annihilate my enemy with 'his own sword"?
I, like David, must assess my situation. I must first evaluate and define who (or what) my enemy is. Then, I must determine what the outcome of the imminent battle is to be ("so help me God"). I must also take inventory of my resources for battle - what I have to fight with (my proven effective and efficient attributes). Naturally, I must shut out the naysayers who prophesy my doom and, instead, equip myself with the memories of past victories, reasoning that if God brought me through previous battles, He will bring me through the battle at hand. I must resolve that there are only two possible outcomes: 1) overcome (in concert with previous victories), or 2) be overcome (which, although a possibility, is unlikely based on proven successes). There can be no allowance for doubt or fear. I must run to the battle and face my enemy head-on. And finally, I must not cease fighting when the battle has merely turned to my favor, but must persist to finish the job as David finished Goliath with resources that became available in the process.
Father, help me to apply my own prescribed plan of action today. I know that unless I determine who or what my enemy is, I will never be able to engage in battle!
