If someone has committed a crime worthy of death and is executed and hung on a tree, the body must not remain hanging from the tree overnight. You must bury the body that same day, for anyone who is hung is cursed in the sight of God. In this way, you will prevent the defilement of the land the Lord your God is giving you as your special possession. [Deuteronomy 21.22-23]
I don't know if this passage really 'points' to Christ or not. However, it does give some insight and meaning to the extent of which Jesus was punished.
If Jesus were only falsely accused and excommunicated, that would have been one thing.
If Jesus had only been ridiculed and spit upon, that would have been one thing.
If Jesus had only been beaten and released, that would have been one thing.
If Jesus had been killed as a result of the beatings and abuse, that would have been one thing.
But for Jesus to be crucified - hung on a cross - was a curse from God.
Jesus did not suffer for 'some' sin, He suffered for all of it. He was not simply chastised as if that would suffice as payment for sin, He was cursed! Jesus suffered the worst case scenario in order to cover all mankind's sin. He was cursed so those who believe could be blessed.
This is worth some serious consideration today and every day!
Father, thank You for accepting the sacrifice of Jesus on my behalf!
