All those who touch a dead human body will be ceremonially unclean for seven days. They must purify themselves on the third and seventh days with the water of purification; then they will be purified. But if they do not do this on the third and seventh days, they will continue to be unclean even after the seventh day. All those who touch a dead body and do not purify themselves in the proper way defile the Lord’s Tabernacle, and they will be cut off from the community of Israel. Since the water of purification was not sprinkled on them, their defilement continues. [Numbers 19.11-13]
I feel like there is somehow a picture of Christ in this passage of scripture. I just don't know where! It would seem to me that the third and seventh days have some significance to Jesus as He arose from the grave on the third day. I just don't understand how the defilement of touching a dead body affects the Tabernacle however and not the other way around. I would have thought that the Tabernacle would have a cleansing affect on the one defiled.
It is worth considering that after Jesus' resurrection (on the third day), when He encountered Mary at the empty tomb, He indicated that she should not touch or cling to Him because He had not yet ascended to the Father (John 20). So, even though He Himself had been dead, because He had resurrected, there was a unique "un-defiled" status accompanying His situation that enabled Jesus to stand before the Father God on behalf of all who believe. Jesus, in death, had not just become defiled, but had literally become the source of defilement. And, having come back from the dead, Jesus left that defilement of death in the grave once and for all and needed to consummate the deal before God (and, quite possibly in the presence of the Accuser Satan) in a legal setting.
This is all very intriguing when considering the legal aspects of it as it pertains to death, defilement, and 'right to death' Satan held over mankind resultant to the Original Sin in the Garden of Eden.
I realize I have not at all explained anything here, but rather posed what, in my mind, are some details worth much further consideration.
Father, I know when I read Numbers 19.11-13 that I must be looking at an amazing picture of Christ. I know that I could probably look up some reference material on the subject and have it all clearly explained to me. However! I wish for Your Spirit to reveal Your Christ to me through nothing but Your Word as the Bible and Your promptings reveal IT to me! I guess I need to know today that the Bible does not require any outside reference in order to reveal Your plan, Your love, Your Christ!
