God's Will vs. Whatever Happens

So Abraham said to God, “May Ishmael live under your special blessing!”  But God replied, “No—Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son for you.  You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant. [Genesis 17.18-19]

God is pretty much all about doing what He says He will do.  Although it certainly 'looked' like Ishmael must have been the channel of blessing God had referred to originally, God told Abraham otherwise.

This makes a good point.  It seems that in following God, it is all too easy to 'receive a direction from God' but then end up accepting whatever comes along as the fulfillment of that direction even though it is not exactly what God originally said!

Is God's will exactly what He says will happen?  Or is whatever happens simply therefore God's will?

We should be challenged today, first, to review what it is that we know God has spoken to us.  Then, we need to consider whether or not we have mistakenly settled for a "whatever happens is God's will" mindset instead of holding out for exactly what God said.  It is critical in the life of a believer to know that God's will is being done and not that things are just happening and we are then 'calling it' God's will.

Unfortunately however, few ever really experience a clear 'direction from God' in the first place.

Has God spoken directly to me or my situation now or at any time prior to now?  Am I holding out for God's will or have I settled for whatever circumstances have come along?

Father, Abraham's experience with You is a good reminder to me today to focus on what I believe You have spoken in my life and remain true to whatever path is required to align myself with that direction!
