"God" Was A Sore Subject Until...

Then Elijah stood in front of them and said, “How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions?  If the Lord is God, follow him!  But if Baal is God, then follow him!”  But the people were completely silent. [1 Kings 18.21]

I don't know if ever I have encountered an ancient event in the Bible that had more contemporary application than this challenge to Israel by Elijah!

While at one point, it appears (at least in the USA) that secularism has dominated society and that God is no longer the focal point of the people.  But then along comes some tragedy...  9-11 is a good example.  When the World Trade Center towers in NY were the target of massive terrorist attacks, suddenly, the prevalent secular mindset paused and, instead, people turned to God and prayed.

This tragedy, bad as it was, implicated the people of the USA of a greater concern - they are "hobbling between two opinions"...  "God" was a sore subject until we found ourselves sitting in a pile of rubble.

As a resident of the state of Oklahoma in the USA, in recent history, tornadoes ripped through the city of Moore leaving death, destruction, and ...rubble.  Up went signs and over the airwaves went out the politically incorrect pleas, "Pray!"

What did God destroy in Elijah's quest?  The 450 prophets of Baal - the 'pets' of the people - those who promoted and pandered to the peoples' whimsical rebellion of God.  Is there a contemporary correlation here?

I think the LORD would say to us today, “How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions?  If the Lord is God, follow him!  But if humans are God, then follow them!"

Father, we are all too obvious in our "hobbling" between two opinions.  You are God.  Help us to follow You and You alone.
