The people of Israel actually heard with their own ears the Ten Commandments from the voice of God. After hearing these Commandments, they decided they did not want to hear God speak again. God told them that they were right in assuming they were in danger if they heard Him again.
You know, I find this all very confusing...
I would think that if I ever heard God speak once, I would want to hear Him speak all the time. But I guess I have some erroneous idea of what it would be like to actually hear God speak! I suupose I imagine I could handle hearing God speak. I suppose, in some very uninformed way, I think I would not be afraid of God as the Israelites were but be very attentive ane perhaps even conversive.
Where did I get my ideas?
If all Israel, after being led out of Egypt - seeing all the powerful displays of God's power - were afraid to hear God speak, what makes me think I could hear Him speak and not be terrified?
Father, help me to review some of my ideas about You. Help me to do this every day.
