Both yesterday and today, I am trying to get my head around what is going on in the book of Job with a fresh perspective. I am trying to address this with a bit more analytical approach...
The whole discussion between God and the devil is perplexing. When did this occur? I know the book of Job dates way back, but when? After Adam but before Noah? After the flood? (I am inclined to believe after the flood because "rain" is mentioned).
The benefit of knowing when Job existed would be to have some reference point as to what was going on in the earth and other folks lives and stories to see how they coincide (if at all).
Interestingly enough, Abraham is never mentioned in the book of Job - neither are Isaac or Jacob. The word 'Israel' is not found in Job. The Law is not spoken of in Job ("law" as it pertains to laws of nature is used a couple times). Is it possible that Job predates all these? Job does speak of "the words of the Holy One" but no further insight is offered as to what that means.
It would be interesting to understand more about the cities/regions of Tema and Sheba as they are mentioned. Also, a 'weaver's shuttle' is mentioned indicating that at least that bit of technology existed concurrent with Job's life.
What does this all mean? I have no idea, but I am paying attention to these details to see if perhaps they can give some insight as to the meaning of the book as a whole.
Father, please give me wisdom to comprehend what I am reading about Job and to understand more clearly what took place and how it relates to us today.
