Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. [Psalm 90.12]
The realization of the brevity of life - now that is wisdom.
The shame of it however is that most do not actually fully realize the brevity of life until it is practically all gone. Instead of being taught the deception of childhood's long days and seemingly endless years, we are taught to enjoy it. It is really no wonder that teens struggle so with direction and the middle-aged are then stifled with reality. Only later, as aging adults we join the familiar remorseful chorus, "it goes by so fast."
Father, perhaps from youth we are deceived about life. Help us to communicate effectively with our youngsters so they will not be found remorseful of a life not well-spent.
