Godly Gambling

This is a record of the towns and territory assigned by means of sacred lots to the descendants of Aaron... [I Chronicles 6.54a]

The sacred lots mentioned in this and other portions of today's OYCB reading deserve further explanation.  I just don't have it!

From all instances where the sacred lot is mentioned, it sounds a whole lot like 'holy dice.'

Would God's people actually leave their destiny to chance?  But then, it's not chance, but holy chance - sacred lots ("lot" being the root for lottery) - something about it is consecrated as pure and good like God.  Godly gambling if you will.

I don't know.

Father, I cannot comprehend how You would speak from the cloud and fire to Your children and then allow something as simple as throwing dice - casting lots to reveal Your will.
