It never ceases to amaze me how we pick and choose what rules are good and what are not. Regardless of the blessed fact of redemption in Christ, the commandments given by God offer structure and direction for all lawfulness. Uhh... until it comes to slavery. Surely God must have been mistaken in even addressing slavery without condemning it altogether! Ahh, but society knows better. We have developed social and economic programs whereby slavery is no longer necessary. Of course it does not matter whether or not our programs work! (reader, make certain that the slavery discussed in Exodus is associated in no way with race - it is purely a social and economic reality)
Father, once again today I see the futility of our own thinking...
