Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. [Hebrews 12.14-15]
In verse 14, it appears the writer of Hebrews has completely reverted to a "works" theology for salvation. But it seems he clears it up a bit in verse 15. In other words, living at peace with everyone and living a holy life are resultant to receiving the grace of God. It is not about what we "get", but what we "receive".
It is no mystery then that in contrast to allowing the grace of God to grow, the writer then warns against allowing bitterness to grow which would choke out God's grace...
Hmmm...
Father, it really is all about You. It really is all about what You are doing in me and not what I am doing myself. It really is all about Jesus Whose blood cries out for my forgiveness!
