To an image carved from a piece of wood they say, ‘You are my father.’ To an idol chiseled from a block of stone they say, ‘You are my mother.’ They turn their backs on me, but in times of trouble they cry out to me, ‘Come and save us!’ [Jeremiah 2.27]
Jeremiah's words here point out what is almost a principle. People do what they want to do until they get in trouble - then they call on God.
Why is that?
Is it because people do not 'see' the actual power of God that they wander to other foreign gods?
Jeremiah says they are like a wild donkey in heat - their lust is so strong they literally run to potential mates.
Does that mean that God Almighty does not satisfy them?
What is it about foreign gods - idols made of wood or metal - that attracts people away from Almighty God?
It almost seems like there is a spiritual conspiracy out there against God Almighty!
No kidding!
Father, help us to realize that there is an enemy of man's soul. But even more important than that, help us to realize that YOU have an enemy. Help us to also realize that Your enemy will gladly use us to get at You. Help us to realize that we are so weak apart from You that we would follow after lifeless wood, stone, and metal - turning our backs on the living, powerful, and loving God You are. Help us to realize how often we fall victim (by our own faithlessness most of the time) to schemes by Your enemy to attack You. Help us to truly comprehend the big spiritual picture.
