Wow, Paul is having to 'clarify' some of his first letter. Apparently, the people fully took Paul's previous advice and kicked that guy who was sleeping with his father's wife out of their assembly. However, there must be some 'other' communication that has taken place by now since Paul is seemingly having to avoid trouble upon trouble by encouraging them to accept this guy back (since he'd repented). Damage control.
Paul actually failed to fully instruct them when he encouraged judgment upon this man. He evidently did not tell them that a time could come (if the guy repents) that they would have to receive him back into their company. But that time had come - the man repented - and Paul had to adjust his instruction to make allowance.
What a juggling act.
I think this indicates just how serious a matter judgment really is. Mercy is really the goal of judgment. What a thought...
Father, help me to grasp the full extent of Your mercy.
