Blasphemy?

I'm sorry, but I truly believe the church has quite literally mocked Jesus Christ by its promotion of the Ten Commandments (the Law of Moses).

If we can back away from the events recorded in the book of Acts to look at the big picture for a moment, it is clear that the story here is one of the development of the early church. We are given an inside view of this development and are privy to important details. It is clear there is some confusion over the Law of Moses, and justifiably so due to the intolerable control it had wielded over their lives for so long.

For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay no greater burden on you than these few requirements... [Acts 15.28]

"Seemed" good? Hello, that doesn't sound like the early church leaders were all that definitive to me. AND, what's more, we will read not too long from now that Paul himself makes an argument regarding eating meat offered to idols (one of the things that "seemed" good) that is nowhere near so definitive (as a matter of fact, Paul makes it an issue of conscious toward others more than an act of obedience or disobedience to the law).

And, lest I appear to be ignoring Matthew 5.17, I have something to say further: Jesus speaks of "fulfilling" the law in this verse (achieving its purpose in NLT). "Ful-fill" is made up of two words: full and fill. If a glass is full, there simply is no room for more. Jesus filled the glass of the law full by His perfect life. There is simply nothing more we can contribute. By all means, let's keep the glass though - it is a constant reminder of what Jesus did!

Back to the early church... I see this battle with the Law of Moses here in this documentation of the early church and I still see it today. When will we ever settle this issue? Why are will still trying to fill a glass that is (and has been for a long time) full? Why are we blatantly ignoring Jesus' work on the cross on our behalf? Is this not blasphemy? Really?

Either Jesus is completely and thoroughly, Lord - and accomplished everything... or He is nothing. Let us not waver in our estimation of His accomplishments!

Father, I want to glorify You in my estimation of Jesus.
