Over The Top

Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance. [John 12.3]

Talk about humility! I try not to read anything into this that is not there, but this event begs to be explored. I can envision without too much disbelief that Mary would anoint Jesus' feet... as foot washing was a common and practical practice in those days. But, to then wipe Jesus' feet with her hair, Mary was 'over the top'.

I mean, what did that say? What did it indicate? Did Mary immediately go take a bath or, did she run around the house the rest of the day with sticky perfumed hair?

Hmmm.

Father, I believe Mary's actions say something more than I am getting. Perhaps it is because I am so hard and calloused in regard to true and genuine devotion. If that is the case, I want to come to the place of complete selfless and humble adoration of You - of Your Son Jesus.
