Man, I would hate to have been Jeremiah! What a job that guy had! I suppose the close relationship he had with the Lord made all the difference…but wait…in Jeremiah 20.14 Jeremiah curses the day he was born. That certainly doesn’t sound like a happy camper. Is it safe to say he was just having a bad day, or was he genuinely suicidal? It seems like he is really up and down. Poor guy.
Would it be too much of a stretch to assume that if one of God’s great prophets, Jeremiah, had such a tough time, that we too may indeed experience difficulties? On one hand there would be the pride of being ‘God’s messenger’. On the other, like the penguins in the film Madagascar said upon reaching their supposed ideal polar destination, would we too exclaim, “This sucks!”?
Comparing Jeremiah to the apostle Paul today yields an interesting comparison. Without a lengthy explanation, suffice it to say that the message of Jeremiah, compared to the “Good News” Paul proclaimed, was NOT a message of grace!
In 1 Thessalonians 5.9 today we find these words, “For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out His anger on us.” THANK GOD! If we fail read the Old Testament and the dreadful prophecies therein we may subsequently fail to recognize just how ‘good’ the Good News of Jesus really is. Awesome.
God, thank You for Your Son, Jesus. Thank You that His birth, life, death, and resurrection are indeed Good News for us who believe today!
