Trouble Will Come

I feel like I have more understanding of trouble today. Not that I have already had what I would consider my share of trouble, because more is sure to come, but that I have experienced it in the past and AM experiencing some degree of it now. So I write...

Solomon addresses some issues in Ecclesiastes. Trouble appears to be thematic in general in Solomon's appraisal of his condition. Then in 2 Corinthians, Paul also refers to troubles (6.4). What I see today primarily is that trouble is universal. Trouble is no respecter of person either.

Just yesterday, I spoke with a man who is having his share of trouble. Much of his trouble could be attributed to bad decisions. Ironically, this person was complaining about the apparent "well-being" of others who seem to intentionally make bad decisions and seemingly prosper for doing it. As I pondered his words, I realized that I too am probably experiencing trouble because of decisions I have made although my motivation was not evil or rebellious (in my own estimation). I concluded (doesn't that sound special?) that in this life I will make decisions that reap both good and bad results. Of course I will strive for those good results, but I must acknowledge that I am not perfect. This sounds strikingly similar to Job!

Bottom line: trouble will come. It is inevitable. It is unavoidable... Whether we make our own trouble, or, by association share in the trouble of those close to us.

How I handle trouble quickly emerges as the real difference-maker. If trouble is as sure as living, then it makes perfect sense to factor in a calculated response to it. But what to do? I was once again amazed and grateful at the timely arrangement of the One Year Bible today when I read in the Psalms, "Be still and know that I am God..." Psalm 46.10a.

I want to be still and know You, Lord... today. I know trouble will come whether I "open the door" for it or not. Give me grace not necessarily to see my way through it, but by Your hand to be seen through it!
