Gideon's Story - Any Application Today?

Early the next morning, as the people of the town began to stir, someone discovered that the altar of Baal had been broken down and that the Asherah pole beside it had been cut down. In their place a new altar had been built, and on it were the remains of the bull that had been sacrificed. The people said to each other, “Who did this?” And after asking around and making a careful search, they learned that it was Gideon, the son of Joash. [Judges 6.28-29]

Gideon made a stand. He took action. Gideon went directly to that which was ground zero for Israel's sin and destroyed it.

The significance of Gideon doing his deed at night is unknown, but, suffice it to say, it became public knowledge anyway.

Gideon's actions stirred up people who wanted to destroy him, but his own father came to his defense with great logic, "If Baal truly is a god, let him defend himself..."

So now, how does this story apply to the idols today that the people of earth (including the people of God) pay homage to?

First, it would seem right that God would speak to someone about it as Gideon was addressed. Gideon's fleece test, although not necessary, would indicate that Gideon was sure it was the LORD's leading that he rescue Israel.

Then, although Gideon tore down the altar of Baal at night, it became public knowledge with only a little inquiry among the people. For us today, it can be assumed that any person who stands to take action against the idols of our time will become known.

If the motivation behind destroying false idols is pure and ordained by God, it makes sense from Gideon's account that others will rally in support. However, it should be noted that Gideon's father resorted to apologetics to reason with the people, "If Baal truly is a god, let him defend himself and destroy the one who broke down his altar!" (Judges 6.31).

In considering all this, it should be understood that the idols of today have very much become thread in the fabric of society - particularly in developed people groups. These idols stand wealthy and large with imposing power upon the lives of those who serve them. Not the least of these idols are medicine, insurance, and finance. With little convincing, one might easily include government in this list. These all offer enticing services but quickly become lords over the people they 'serve.' So imposing are these idols that one is hard-pressed to find retreat from their oversight as did Gideon in threshing wheat hidden in a winepress.

Are there any Gideon's today? But a better question could be, are there any like Gideon's father today? Does anyone dare defend another who 'bucks the system' of today's idols? Where are those who will rally to the defense of God and not today's idols? Where are those today who will defy the world's idols that wield so much control over them? Be sure of this, they will be known in short order!

Father, does Gideon's story have any application to today?

FOR THE RECORD, today marks my 6,000th post on this blog. While it seems a significant feat, the fact that it falls on April Fool's Day (2024) should serve as a reminder that only God's Word should guide our lives - not the writings of any man, regardless how convincing they might be.
