“Can a person do anything to help God? Can even a wise person be helpful to him? [Job 22.2]
It seems prudent when reading the book of Job to be very cautious about what we quote as right or wrong from it. We must keep in mind that Job, Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar were all in need of repentance at the end of the story. So, everything they are on record of having said should be scrutinized carefully for accuracy!
In light of what God says to Job near the end of the story (yet to come in the OYCB reading this year), it seems the passage quoted above is indeed accurate. There really is nothing we can do to help God. He is all sufficient in all things whether we exist or not. He did not need us to create the world. He does not need us to sustain the world. Our only significance to God is that He indeed created us and loves us.
In fact, much of what I read that Job and his friends said seems accurate. However, again, we know there is a rebuke coming for them...
Father, help me to always remain conscious about what I say. May my words be always in line with Your Word and Your Spirit.
