The LORD rescues the godly; he is their fortress in times of trouble. [Psalm 37.39]
Can we just get real for a minute?
Doesn't it make sense that if God rescues the godly and is their fortress in times of trouble, then, if we are NOT rescued in our troubles, then we are NOT godly?
I know that's just all too simple a conclusion.
Jesus said:
“There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. [John 3.18]
Surely though, there must be an answer to the question above that does not implicate me as guilty, right?
Jesus went on to say:
And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.” [John 3.19-21]
The very fact that I insist on my innocence, says that I love the darkness more than the light! Those who do evil, Jesus said, refuse to go near the light because it reveals their sin!
Is that not exactly what we saw with the original sin in the Garden of Eden? Adam and Eve HID from God because they did not want to admit their guilt. And, what did they do? They started making excuses and casting blame elsewhere.
The truth of the matter is this: people should repent, and remain repentant. The Word of God is clear on the matter:
You rescue the humble, but you humiliate the proud. [Psalm 18.27]
The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. [Psalm 51.17]
The high and lofty one who lives in eternity, the Holy One, says this: “I live in the high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts. [Isaiah 57.15]
My hands have made both heaven and earth; they and everything in them are mine. I, the LORD, have spoken! “I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word. [Isaiah 66.2]
And still, with these and so many more scriptures indicating the need for us to repent and stay repentant, we instead dare declare innocence and falsely accuse God of random undeserved unpredictable punishment!
GOD, FORGIVE US THIS WRONG!
Father, lead us to the truth of Your Word and avoid proud explanations that defend our innocence! May we be found repentant at all times! So be it!
