Meekness

Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. [John 13.3-5]

Think about this: Jesus KNEW God had given Him AUTHORITY OVER EVERYTHING and so what did He do? He humbled Himself and washed His followers' feet!

Not only did Jesus wash His "subordinates' feet," but among them was Judas Iscariot whom Jesus knew would betray Him. So, what did Jesus do? He washed Judas' feet also knowing full well Judas had already given in to betraying Jesus.

I cannot help but believe Jesus was rehearsing in His mind something He had already preached:

God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. [Matthew 5.5]

The King James Version of the Bible uses the word "meek" instead of "humble."

Here was Jesus, with authority over everything, humbly (meekly) washing the feet of a group of me who would all betray Him, and one of them, unto death.

I would say Jesus demonstrated some serious control in His act of humility/meekness!

While meekness can certainly be defined as "power under control," it can also be interpreted here as "laser focus." Jesus' undistracted concentration enabled Him to restrain His authority and power so that He might fulfill His life purpose of saving the world.

What a life lesson for us!

Father, may my life be found focused on Your goal for the earth.
