For all who get lost in the Old Testament (or even the New Testament for that matter), Matthew's account of Jesus' talk about the Golden Rule (as we call it) sheds some light.

The Golden Rule is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets (the Old Testament). This is huge! And, if Jesus said it, it simply must be considered worthy of no half-hearted meditation!

Matthew 7.12 is an appropriate companion scripture to John 5.39:

“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! [John 5.39]

While there is, no doubt, much to be learned and lined-up with in the Old Testament, there is much more to be learned about Jesus and the way of life He modeled! The Bible is about Jesus! To lose touch with this fact is to simply be religious. No amount of Bible knowledge that is not founded upon Christ is sufficient for the salvation and growth of the human soul. If we miss Jesus, we have missed the point.

Jesus modeled the Golden Rule more effectively than anyone ever.
