“Please, LORD, prove that your power is as great as you have claimed. For you said, ‘The LORD is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. But he does not excuse the guilty. He lays the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations.’ In keeping with your magnificent, unfailing love, please pardon the sins of this people, just as you have forgiven them ever since they left Egypt.” [Numbers 14.17-19]
Moses' intercession for the people was, and is still, profound.
There is a very important message in this intercession though. God's mercy upon Israel had nothing to do with Israel's goodness, but everything to do with God's goodness.
This important message is the same today. Jesus' death on the cross had nothing at all to do with the goodness of man, but everything to do with the goodness of God.
Sin has its just reward, but we must be sure of this, God's goodness ALWAYS is motivated by Who and What God Is: slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion.
It was this character of God that planned "the Cross" from the beginning of time. The Cross demonstrated both God's justice and His love - all in one event.
We might easily say the 'sister' scripture to Numbers 14.17-19 is John 3.16.
How cool is that? God is good.
Father, Your character is amazing. Thank You for allowing us to experience 'You" in this life Thank You for every opportunity to know You more and experience more of You as we do.
