“Next make a medallion of pure gold, and engrave it like a seal with these words: HOLY TO THE LORD. Attach the medallion with a blue cord to the front of Aaron’s turban, where it must remain. Aaron must wear it on his forehead so he may take on himself any guilt of the people of Israel when they consecrate their sacred offerings. He must always wear it on his forehead so the LORD will accept the people. [Exodus 28.36-38]

The details found in today's OYCB reading are amazing. Details for the Ark of the Covenant, the Table, the Lampstand, the Tabernacle, the Altar, the Courtyard, and the Priestly Garments are all included with specific design and form.

I found the passage noted above of particular interest because of the reasoning for the design given. A medallion with the words HOLY TO THE LORD was to be worn by Aaron (the High Priest) when he entered the Most Holy Place. He was to wear it so he could take on himself any guilt of the people upon their consecration of their sacred offerings. This medallion (or, "sign," if you will) had to accompany the High Priest as he entered God's presence (with the guilt of the people upon him) so God would accept the people.

So, here's the picture: Aaron comes before God with the guilt of the people which would normally mean immediate annihilation except for the "sign" on his turban that says HOLY TO THE LORD.

Funny thing - my wife pointed this out recently - it doesn't seem Aaron or his sons had a choice in the matter of whether or not they wanted to be priests. I mean, with all the protocol required with death at stake, who would want the job?

Thank God that Jesus fulfilled all this protocol with His blood!

Father, help me to consider how big a deal it is to come into Your presence. Help me to understand the enormity of guilt that Jesus paid for with His blood.
