“Whenever a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his entire body in water, and he will remain ceremonially unclean until the next evening. Any clothing or leather with semen on it must be washed in water, and it will remain unclean until evening. After a man and a woman have sexual intercourse, they must each bathe in water, and they will remain unclean until the next evening. [Leviticus 15.16-18]
Why not just dive in and discuss this?
The only thing is, I have no clue what this is about!
So, let's look at some details. Why does an emission of semen make a man unclean? What is different about the emission of semen and the emission of urine? Life - life is the answer. Semen carries life, urine does not.
So, what about the life in semen makes a man unclean? If God ordained intercourse between a man and woman, would it no seem right that their consummation would be a holy thing (I wonder why the context didn't say "man and his wife" instead of "man and a woman"). Regardless, what about life-bearing semen is unclean?
I keep thinking it has something to do with a forward-looking reason having to do with Jesus. Jesus was not conceived as every other man on earth. There was no semen involved in the conception of Jesus. The Holy Spirit performed a miracle outside the parameters of normal human propagation.
So, had Joseph and Mary had sex, there is no way anything "Absolutely Holy" could have been the result.
This would be why the virgin birth is so important. This would be why God would make a rule about the emission of semen from a man - just so there would be no mistake about the conception and arrival of Messiah in the future!
How cool is that?
Father, I don't know if my conclusions here are right or wrong. But, if as Jesus said all the law and prophets point to Himself, then it seems right to me that this law regarding the emission of semen would point to Him!
