Never sacrifice sick or defective cattle, sheep, or goats to the LORD your God, for he detests such gifts. [Deuteronomy 17.1]
After reading the passage above today, it stands out to me again that God DETESTS sickness and physical defects.
It would probably be important to clarify that God does not hate his creation - He does not hate the thing upon which the sickness or defect dwells. But the less-than-perfect physical condition is less-than-perfect to God who created life based on His own perfect physical condition. So, He detests any perversion of His perfect creation!
I know we live in a "fallen world." I know there is an abundance of sickness and defects all around us. I know many of us experience physical defects. This does not mean that God detests us. However, it does mean that we can be absolutely sure of God's attitude toward our weakness whatever it might be. He wants us to be delivered from anything that makes us less than perfect!
Furthermore, we can be sure that God has absolutely no physical defects in His house. We can rest assured that there will be no sickness or disease of any kind when we get to His house - heaven.
And, further still, we can be sure that Jesus made no mistake in teaching us to pray like this: [Father] ...May Your will be done on earth AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.
Until we firmly accept and believe these facts about God and His will, we can have no hope of realizing change in our weaknesses.
Our job, as believers, is to have God's attitude about everything - and God detests sickness and disease. Regardless whether we ever operate in His power to overcome these weaknesses, we must never take sides with the thing God detests! We must never embrace physical defects - we must instead categorically reject any notion of their being appropriate to our lives and condition!
We must follow the example of Jesus Who constantly brought relief for physical abnormalities. Mind you, the only time He did not heal sicknesses was when the faith of the people prevented it. But it did not change Jesus modus operandi - it did not stop Jesus from healing the sick and raising the dead - where there was faith!
WE must, like Jesus, understand that God's Word is for us, and for us to live as Jesus lived it - “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”
Father, I want to have Your mind and Jesus' actions about physical defects!
